How to get into Nursing Assistant
The Certificate of Nursing Assistant prepares entry-level nursing assistants to provide basic nursing care to elderly, ill, and disabled persons in long-term care, hospital, clinic and home health settings. It is designed for any student or interested individuals who want to begin a career as a Nursing Assistant, individual interested in taking the course, but are still at developmental English and math levels, and for persons already employed as nursing assistants, but who have not completed the formal course work. The course is six (6) weeks in length and prepares students to also take the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP) Competency Examination. After successfully completing the course, graduates will be eligible to take the NNAAP Competency Examination with the Northern Mariana Islands (NMI) Board of Nursing, Northern Mariana Islands, be licensed as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), be placed on the NMI Board of Nursing Registry for Nursing Assistants, and practice as a CNA in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands or U.S. Mainland.
Applicants must have a High School Diploma or Equivalent. An applicant must have an English Placement Level of EN 095 and a Math Placement Level of MA 091.

For interested applicants/individuals who ARE NOT a student at NMC:
- The student must apply to the Northern Marianas College through our Admissions Application. The application can be found at the Office of Admissions and Records or on the college’s website (www.marianas.edu) and costs $25 for resident-status individuals and $50 for non-resident status individuals. The application requires individuals to submit an official high school or equivalent transcript and a copy of a valid, government-issued photo ID.
- The student must schedule a date for the English and Math Placement Tests with the Isabel Matsunaga at the Testing Center ([email protected]). Each placement test is $25 for both residents and non-residents. Individuals must be placed in EN 095 for English and MA 091 for Math.
- The student must submit a completed Physical/Health Examination Form, which can be filled and completed in the private clinics around the island. The health evaluation form must validate vaccinations for measles, mumps, rubella, tetanus, and hepatitis B; you must also provide results of current PPD skin test (current = two years).
- All requirements must be fulfilled prior to authorization to register for the NU 095 Nursing Assistant course. Once all documents and requirements have been reviewed and met, the individual will then be authorized by the Nursing Instructor to register for the course.
For interested applicants/individuals who are a student at NMC:
- The student must be at the EN093/EN084 and MA091 level or above.
- The student must submit an updated Physical/Health Examination Form which can be done in the various private clinics on island. The health evaluation form must validate vaccinations for measles, mumps, rubella, tetanus, and hepatitis B; you must also provide results of current PPD skin test (current = two years).
