Internship Opportunity for NMC Students (March 7, 2013)

Students who are seeking to deepen their studies in marine biology, earth sciences, marine sciences, or environmental systems, are strongly encourage to apply for an excellent internship opportunity that involves a 10-week research project (with a mentor) in Hawaii! The program will pay for all travel costs between the CNMI and Hawaii and will also provide a stipend of about $4,000 for the 10 week period.

Students and permanent residents from the CNMI and other Pacific islands, in particular students from Northern Marianas College and other colleges in the Pacific, are eligible to apply. The internship program is most interested in students who wish to seek degrees by conducting research that aims towards increasing understanding or improving environmental conditions on the Pacific islands, and who anticipate spending their lives in the Pacific Islands.

Within the broad theme of environmental biology, research areas for the internship include field ecological studies on marine ecosystems that are largely intact, as well as those that are badly damaged by invasive alien species and pollution, studies of both coastal and mountain biota, with emphases on invertebrate, vertebrate and plant communities, biodiversity investigations using classical and molecular approaches, and species-focused research on island endemics. The expectation is that the students trained with the support of this program will contribute significantly to conserving and restoring native species and habitats in their home islands through hands-on activities in governmental or private agencies and training new generations of islanders.

NOAA funded intern slots are still available ”“ deadline is March 15, 2013. For more information, please email [email protected] or visit
