Farmers cooperative seeks NMC's help (Aug. 12, 2016)

OFFICIALS of the CNMI Farmers Cooperative Association met with Northern Marianas College business department officials on Thursday to seek support for the Garapan Public Market’s operations.

“We were seeking technical assistance from NMC,” cooperative president Ramon B. Camacho told Variety.

He said they gave NMC business department chairperson Chavel Green as well as instructors Barbara Bobbie Hunter and Richard Waldo pertinent information about the cooperative and its operations.

“We need their recommendations about business strategy and goals,” Camacho said, adding that the college’s business department can make Garapan Public Market a model for study.

At the meeting, Camacho said he informed NMC about their on-going programs which include reaching out to hotels and restaurants which can be supplied with farm produce from the cooperative.

He said the cooperative is now regularly supplying produce to the Commonwealth Health Center and the Hyatt Regency Saipan.

“We continue to contact other hotels and ask them to patronize our market,” he added.

NMC-Cooperative Research and Extension Education Services aquaculture consultant Michael Ogo said they will donate some equipment for the market’s value-added products.

According to Camacho, they are planning to use two rooms in the market for making value-added products such as local potato and banana chips.
