Saipan Tribune: 2 NMC students receive scholarship by Matson (November 03, 2016)

Two students of the Northern Marianas College were the initial beneficiaries yesterday of Matson Inc.’s first donation of $1,500 out of a total of $7,500 in pledged scholarships.

Matson will be donating scholarship funds in the next five years to students of Saipan’s lone community college in celebration of 20 years of doing business in Micronesia.

NMC president Dr. Carmen Fernandez is honored that Matson has expressed an interest in furthering their students’ ambitions.

“We are deeply appreciative of Matson’s commitment to provide NMC students with scholarship funds over the next five years. The funds go a long way in helping our students reach their educational and professional goals,” she said.

Matson account executive Prudence Denight said that Matson believes in the “advantages of education and the opportunities it presents an individual.”

“We are a business partner and also a community partner. This year we are celebrating 20 years of conducting business in the CNMI, Guam, and in Micronesia, so we took up the opportunity to provide to start up this scholarship. This first issuance of check coincides with our 20th anniversary this year,” said Denight.

The two students that received the scholarship funds were Business Management major Gemma Somol and Business Management freshman Isa Seman.

Somol said the scholarship would be beneficial to her. “I really love it. I was so surprised when I found out. This is the first time I’ve won a scholarship, so I really appreciate it. I feel like this would make my dreams possible. It would help me along the way,” said Somol.

Seman was also surprised to obtain the scholarship. “I am actually surprised that I got it, but I am thankful for it. It’s really going to help me.”

The check issued to NMC amounting to $1,500 is the first of five yearly scholarships that will be sponsored by Matson.
