NMC prepares for the 11th Pacific Mini Games (September 11, 2017)

NORTHERN Marianas College President Carmen Fernandez announced the board’s approval of the renovation and expansion of the NMC gym which will be the venue for the 11th Pacific Mini Games that the CNMI will host in 2021.

Fernandez said NMC is waiting for the proposed design before soliciting bids from contractors.

The new gym will have a seating capacity of 2,000.

The project, estimated to cost $4.6 million, will be funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Fernandez said.

The NMC gym was destroyed by Typhoon Soudelor in 2015.

“Now we will have a bigger facility,” Fernandez said.

The new gym will be weather-resistant, air-conditioned with 24 hours of power and water supply, she said, adding that it will take one year and a half to complete the project.

“The special thing about the gym is we can use it as shelter for disaster or during bad weather,” Fernandez said.

NMC has also started a master planning process for a multi-level campus facility which will include a student dormitory and parking space, she said, adding that they will try to secure funding through a U.S. Department of Agriculture loan. “We are looking at $50 million,” she added.
