Community members invited to digitization project presentation. (September 24, 2018)

Northern Marianas College and the Northern Marianas Humanities Council are inviting interested community members to participate in the upcoming CNMI Archives Digitization Project presentations. The presentations will be held on Sept. 25, 26, and 27, 2018, and will be conducted by humanities scholar Rlene Steffy.

The first two days of the presentation will focus on what oral history is, the collection methods, the oral history process, the benefits of the practice, and whether oral history is trustworthy. The presentations on Sept. 25 and 26 are scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Room D1, at NMC’s As Terlaje campus on Saipan.

The final presentation on Sept. 27, 2018, will be held at the American Memorial Park’s indoor theater, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. This presentation will focus on the contents of the collection, topics that include family lineage, historical accounts, and life in the CNMI before and after World War II.

The general public is encouraged to attend all three presentations at no charge.

Since its charter in 1981, Northern Marianas College has served as the home of the CNMI Archives. Throughout the years, many oral and written histories of the CNMI have been recorded on VHS cassette and were transcribed by the late Herbert Del Rosario. The college aims to preserve all the collected histories by digitizing all recordings to minimize the chance of deterioration or damage. The CNMI Archives intends to make the historical contents in the collection accessible to students, community members, and researchers at the college website.
