Marianas Variety: Agricultural Fair's top winners: Cabrera, Jones, Torres (July 29, 2019)

HANNAH Cabrera, Joseph Jones and Jack Torres were the top winners in this year’s Agricultural Fair.

Cabrera was the overall winner in the youth division. Jones won first prize for plants (fruits and vegetables) while Torres finished first in the livestock division.

This year’s event highlighted the local farmers and ranchers’ resiliency, Saipan Agricultural Fair Association president Dr. Ignacio Dela Cruz said.

“It was a big success,” he added, referring to the 36th Agricultural Fair held at Garapan Central Park on Saturday.

This year’s theme was “Agri-Resiliency — Today and Tomorrow.”

Dela Cruz said even though the CNMI was hit by Typhoons Mangkhut and Yutu in September and October 2018, “here we are, gathered together to attest to the genuine resiliency of our hard working farmers and ranchers by witnessing firsthand the [island’s] finest looking livestock and fresh and abundant produce, fruits and vegetables.”

He added, “Our dedicated farmers and ranchers and our youth who are aspiring to be the next generation farmers and ranchers truly deserve respect, honor and recognition for their endurance and perseverance. That is what we call resiliency.”

Craig Elevitch, director of Hawaii-based Agroforestry Net, was one of the judges at the fair. He said the 75 different crops showcased in the event were impressive. “The quality was really good,” he added.
