CARES Act Funds for Students (April 24, 2020 Update)

Dear NMC Students:

As announced, Northern Marianas College is releasing, over the next few days, the CARES Act funds to NMC students who were enrolled in the Spring 2020 semester. The CARES Act funds are made available for the sole and exclusive purpose of providing emergency financial aid grants to students for their expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to coronavirus, such as course materials, technology, food, housing, health care, and child-care expenses.

Two emails were sent to students this past week by Shelly Tudela (from the NMC Finance Office) asking students to 1) indicate their preference: direct deposit into your bank account or have check mailed; and 2) acknowledge the CARES Act funds provisions. Be sure to respond to these emails. Contact the NMC hotline at (670) 285-7651 or (670) 285-2059 if you have any question or need assistance.

IMPORTANT UPDATE (new): Please note that the College has received additional guidance on Thursday April 23, 2020, from the U.S. Department of Education that indicates the funds are limited to those who have demonstrated eligibility to file a FAFSA. Thus, funds may not be provided at this time to those students who are ineligible to file a FAFSA. We, along with other colleges, are looking to clarify this guidance and will provide more updates as they become available.

The attached FAQ sheet also lists additional sources of financial assistance that we will continue to update as more information becomes available. Please take a few minutes to review the document.

Thank you, and have a restful weekend. Continue to stay safe.
