Matson Awards Scholarships to NMC Students (April 29, 2020)

In its efforts to support higher education in the CNMI, the Matson Navigation Company Scholarship Program recently awarded academic scholarships to three deserving Northern Marianas College students.

The students who were selected to receive the Matson Scholarship are Joyce Cuenca, Jamarie Paras, and Jessy Lou Lizama. The three recipients had undergone a highly competitive application process that included several essay requirements and a panel interview.

The Matson Scholarship awards scholarships to three deserving full-time NMC students pursuing a degree in either a bachelor’s in business management or an associate of science in accounting during each academic school year. Each student will receive about $500.00. The scholarships were awarded based on financial need, merit, eligibility, the content of the applicant’s essay, and an interview panel.

This was the company’s fourth donation of scholarships to Northern Marianas College students.

Cuenca is currently pursuing her Bachelor of Science in Business Management with a concentration in accounting. Paras is pursuing both a Bachelor of Science in Business Management and a Bachelor of Science in Accounting, while Lizama is working towards an Associates of Applied Science in Accounting and Business Management degree.

“The College is grateful for Matson’s support of students during these unprecedented times,” said NMC Interim President, Frankie Eliptico. “These funds go a long way in helping our students reach their educational and professional goals.”

The purpose of the Matson Navigation Company Scholarship (Matson Scholarship) is to promote higher education by providing financial assistance for college students in their pursuit of professional careers, help alleviate the critical current and future shortage of skilled and trained workforce for the CNMI, and to provide current public and private sector employees with opportunities to improve their knowledge and skills, and enhance their career and professional development.
