Northern Marianas College School of Education alumni, Jiwon Rebekah Lee, was recently awarded the 2023 District Teacher of the Year at Jubilee Westwood in San Antonio, Texas. Lee, a fifth grade elementary school teacher, has also been recognized as Teacher of the Year for the past two consecutive academic years.
“It has been a great honor to be recognized among so many incredible educators, and I am grateful for this recognition for the District Teacher of the Year award,” Lee said.
Lee's journey to becoming a teacher began at NMC, where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education with high honors in 2018. She credits her NMC professors and former colleagues with helping her to develop the skills and knowledge she needed to be a successful teacher.
“My journey through Northern Marianas College was transformative,” Lee said. “At NMC, I received an outstanding education, forged the importance of resilience, and discovered the power of mentorship.”
Lee noted that with NMC, she was able to quickly transfer her credits and teacher certification process to teach, as well as further her education by pursuing her master’s degree after transferring.
Lee expressed how she had never felt more prepared to enter her career field in teaching.
“I took the opportunity to grow and continue practicing the pedagogy I learned from NMC.”
Additionally, Lee conveyed her appreciation toward her SOE professors and former colleagues here in Saipan, who have supported and encouraged her to strive for excellence in lifelong learning despite the distance.
“Just as I want to be for my students, I too am learning, and if it weren't for their demonstration of commitment to excellence, I wouldn't be standing here in this version of who I am today,” she said.
“I am excited, and as I embark on my new journey into administration work, I can't wait for what lies ahead!”
NMC’s School of Education Director, Roland Merar, congratulated Lee on her monumental achievement.
“Ms. Lee’s journey from the NMC School of Education to becoming a beacon of excellence in the field of education serves as a shining example of what can be achieved through dedication, passion, and an unwavering commitment to the betterment of young minds. Not only has she earned the title of District Teacher of the Year for 2023, but she has also been recognized as Teacher of the Year for the past two consecutive academic years,” he said.
